I got this recipe from a lady who is now in her 90s and still going strong.

Method

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Chop the dates into small pieces, roughly ¼ inch in size.

Crack the eggs into a large bowl and whisk them together with the sugar until light and pale, about 2 minutes.

Stir the vanilla extract into the egg mixture until combined.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder by whisking them together.

Fold the dry ingredients into the egg mixture until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Fold the chopped dates into the batter until evenly distributed throughout.

Grease an 8x8-inch square baking pan and pour the batter into it, spreading evenly.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the edges are lightly golden.

Remove from the oven and allow the baked good to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack.
