Combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a small bowl and let sit for 5 minutes until foamy, indicating the yeast is active.

Mix flour and salt in a large bowl, then create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, shortening, and egg.

Stir until a soft dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 2-3 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball by pulling the sides toward the bottom and sealing.

Place the shaped rolls on a greased baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Cover the rolls loosely with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise in a warm place for 10 minutes until puffy.
